Another Ramble Through Rural France
We enjoyed our rural France ramble so much that we took another one today. Might get in another one or two before we leave a week from today. Today’s ramble took us in the same general direction: east from Bois-le-Rois, our homebase here. Mostly, we just wandered from town to town, taking in the beauty of rural France, and as always, finding interesting things.

Another mystery
We saw this structure and stopped to ogle it. What is it? I thought maybe it was once a farm; many old farms in France look like fortresses, with all the buildings and equipment inside a walled courtyard. But we’d never seen anything like this: it’s in perfect condition and it has, unusually, a tall square tower and a shorter round one. And a locked gate to keep us oglers out.

This was indeed a farm, unusual in that it once belonged to another abbaye — hence the two towers. The abbaye is first mentioned in 1186 and was forced to dissolve itself during the French Revolution. I couldn’t find any history on it from the time it was abandoned until it was converted to a private residence just a few years ago! The architectural firm that did the conversion has it on their website [Fresnieres Architects]. I can’t even guess how much it would have cost to do the conversion; the resulting house is beautiful and huge — 16,650 square feet!
An abandoned canal and lock
Ever since Laurie and I first came to France, we’ve been fascinated by the canals and canal locks. We can’t say why: maybe like those abbayes that we’ve seen, the canals and locks harken back to an older France.
Today, most of the canal network in France is used solely by tourist boats: private vessels and canal tour companies. Less than 20% of canal traffic is commercial, and almost all that is on one section of one canal. Most commercial boat traffic is on the rivers - the Seine, the Rhine and the Rhone primarily. Abandoned canals such as the one we saw today are not unusual
This canal — the Bray-sur-Seine–La Tomba Canal — bypasses a particularly twisty and fast-flowing section of the Seine, saving peniches (barges) time. It’s 6 miles (10 km) long and straight as an arrow, built in 1899 and abandoned in 1980. As we were driving along it, I saw the remains of a lock just off the road. So we parked and took a look.

Since this canal was built, commercial boats have gotten bigger and bigger. This canal was built for peniches 38 meters long; we have seen barges on the Seine now that are 125 meters long and way too wide to fit in this canal. So as commercial traffic grew on the Seine and locks were built on that river, canals such as this one were no longer needed.



Many canals are still pretty and often have paths that make them enjoyable to hike.

The length of the Bray-sur-Seine–La Tomba canal is being turned into a nature reserve and recreational area. Someday in the future it will see lots of traffic, not in the water but on trails and hikes and pique-nique areas along its banks.
